Bush meat

Poaching for bush meat has reached unprecedented levels in many areas around the globe. Africa is suffering such substantial losses that many areas once teaming with wildlife, have been completely wiped out. The meat is sold commercially to now bustling urban centers looking for cheaper alternatives, particularly in tight economic times. As the meat has not been farmed it can naturally be sold a much cheaper rate. At the other end of the scale, rare dishes such as gorilla, are sold to upper class customers who make full use of the available luxury.

Aren't they just supporting their family?

The argument that bush-meat hunters naturally place their own survival above that of animals is a hollow one. It is just a convenient way to avoid having to deal with the problem. It is an industry bent on greed where there never seems to be enough supply. It is not a matter of a person putting a few snares out around their property. It can only be termed 'wildlife genocide', where animals are exterminated in the tens-of-thousands.

Subsistance Poaching

On the other hand is poaching for the pot. This is done by often poor village people who genuinely need to put food on the table. The IAPF understands these dilemmas and seeks to work with communities surrounding protected areas to utilise natural resources in a sustainable way. Jason Gardens is fantastic initiative that works hand in hand with the IAPF to help communities remain self sustainable.
